No, no & no. There is no competition and there never has been. The automotive industry has always ridiculed Tesla for their Vision-Only approach. It resulted in the breach with Intel MobilEye. Guess what they recently announced? A vision-only approach and move away from LiDar! 

There is no other OEM out there with over 6 million cars that, with the flick of the switch, can become autonomous driving cars. Every other autonomous ride-hailing company out there does not have the same competitive advantage  benefits like Tesla's highly vertically integrated production system and it's purpose built hardware and software stack like Tesla has at the moment.

Tesla is developing self-driving software and hardware which can reach enormous scale and can be deployed anywhere in the world. This cannot be done by the currently active competitors. They need to map every city and have to rely on 3rd party OEMs for it's cars and have to install ugly and expensive equipment like LiDar, radar and camera's where Tesla manages with just 9 camera's and some form of real-world fleet validation to a low extent.

The strategy is radically different from any other company in the autonomous driving space. Tesla owns the best training clusters, have the best AI simulation/training models and have by far the biggest fleet of over 6 mio FSD capable vehicles already driving around. Waiting to be awakened.

The scalability, technological advantage and low operating cost will play a big role of Tesla's succes in this emerging winner-takes-most market.

Starting as a car company Tesla has become one of the most vertically integrated OEMs in the world.

They have developed one of the world's largest AI training clusters, the most intuitive, user-friendly and reliable car software in the world, self-driving technology, the biggest and most reliable fast-charging network of Superchargers as well as Destination Chargers. They design and manufacture the machines that build their machines all by themselves. They made Cybertruck and Semi, but also Optimus the humanoid robot powered by the same hard & software as they use for FSD.

They are more a robotics, AI, software and an energy company than they are a car company. 

Yes, there are in fact already operational driverless robotaxi's driving around commercially in the U.S. & China but also the Middle-East. The European region is still lagging behind.

Waymo for instance has an active fleet of robotaxis in operation in Phoenix, Los Angeles and San Francisco with a fleet size of around 700 vehicles as of 2024 providing 100,000 paid rides per week. 

Cruise has a similar fleet size and operates in the Houston, Phoenix and San Francisco and looking to expand to Miami, Dallas, Houston & Seattle.

Baidu, a leading Chinese technology company, operates one of the largest robotaxi fleets in China through its autonomous driving platform, Apollo Go. The service is available in multiple cities, including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Wuhan, and Baidu is gradually expanding its operations to other cities in China.

Baidu's Apollo Go robotaxi service has been a key player in China's autonomous vehicle industry. By July 2024, Apollo Go had provided over 7 million rides, marking a significant milestone. The service operates using Baidu's 6th-generation robotaxis, known as RT6, which are equipped with advanced lidar and AI technology. These vehicles are designed to function without safety drivers, relying instead on remote monitoring​

Baidu aims to scale its operations, projecting profitability in some cities by 2025. The company also emphasizes cost efficiency, reducing the cost of its RT6 vehicles to approximately $28,350 USD per unit, making it more viable for mass deployment
